The Mediterranean Association of Meetings on Cinema and Human Rights (ARMCDH) organized the 13th edition of the “White Night of Cinema and Human Rights” under the theme “Cinema and Citizenship.” The event combined a thought-provoking panel discussion with overnight open-air film screenings. This edition featured nine documentary and fiction films from various countries, addressing issues of citizenship, justice, memory, and human rights, followed by public discussions with human rights advocates, academics, and civil society representatives. The debate focused on civic education, participatory democracy, migration, women’s political participation, and the impact of the digital sphere on shaping public awareness, reaffirming the role of cinema as a space for dialogue and the promotion of human rights culture.
The 13th edition of “Cinema and Citizenship Night” witnessed an in-depth discussion following the screenings, highlighting the role of cinema in strengthening civic culture and public debate. It also shed light on contemporary challenges related to social awareness, digital transformations, and recurring crises. Participants emphasized the importance of cinema as a tool for awareness-raising, accountability, and civic engagement, calling for stronger institutional partnerships and greater support for local productions and youth initiatives to ensure the sustainability and broader impact of the dialogue.
The 13th edition further affirmed that cinema is not merely a medium of artistic expression, but an effective tool for rethinking the meaning of citizenship and fostering a culture of dialogue and accountability. The discussions reflected a growing awareness of the importance of interaction between art and society in building responsible and active citizenship, both at the individual and institutional levels.
